What this service includes:

Digital Data Transfer Service.
This service includes the extraction of data from the original faulty module and the transfer of that data to the replacement module provided by the customer. Please note that if the original software is corrupted or has issues, these problems will carry over to the replacement module, which will inherit the same issues. We do not check or test the software as part of this service; the customer is only paying for the data transfer itself.

What we need:

Buyer sends 2 parts, original and replacement. The customer must also include a prepaid return label.

Turnaround:

Most orders are completed within 24-48 hours, but complex repairs may take longer.

Programming & Coding:

Not required. Simply plug and drive once the data transfer is complete (given the problem with the original module was hardware related and not software related).

Warranty:

No Warranty and No Guarantees, Customer assumes all responsibility for the operation of all provided parts, no refunds or returns on customer provided used parts.

Do you test my parts?:

No, we do not perform testing unless the customer requests this service and covers the testing fee.

Mercedes-Benz SAM Module — Clone & Programming Service

You supply the donor — we handle the rest. Send us your original module (even if water-damaged or non-functional) along with a good working used SAM, and we extract your vehicle’s exact configuration, clone it onto the donor, and return a fully coded, plug-and-play replacement. No dealer visit, no XENTRY session required. Covers the W204 C-Class, W212 E-Class, W218 CLS-Class, X204 GLK-Class, and R172 SLK-Class.

You supply the donor SAM — ideal for salvage finds & used modules 100% mail-in — serving all 50 states from Fort Myers, FL Lifetime warranty on every programmed unit
What is this service

Who needs a clone & programming service?

Unlike a programmed-exchange service where ECU Maverick supplies the replacement unit, this service uses your own donor module. You send two units; we return one ready to install. This is the right choice in two common situations:

  • You bought a used SAM module — a salvage-yard find or eBay purchase is coded to the donor vehicle, not yours. We extract your original’s configuration and flash it onto the used unit so it matches your car exactly
  • Your original is damaged or dead — water damage, voltage failure, or a corrosion-destroyed board means you need a hardware replacement. We read as much as possible from the original and program a clean donor to your exact VIN and option specification
  • You want to avoid exchange pricing — if you already sourced a matching SAM, this service programs it to your vehicle for a fraction of a dealer replacement
  • Your scan tool shows U0140 or lost-comm codes — and you have a replacement SAM on hand that just needs to be matched to your car before installation

⚠  Two modules required — read before ordering

This service requires you to ship both units together: (1) your original SAM — even if damaged, corroded, or non-functional — and (2) a good working donor SAM that matches your platform (W204, W212, W218, X204, or R172). We clone from the original onto the donor. If you only have one module, see our Programmed Exchange listing instead.

Failure causes & symptoms

Why Mercedes-Benz SAM modules fail — and what you will notice

The front SAM (N10/1) controls exterior lighting, wipers, power windows, central locking, and immobilizer communication across the front section of the vehicle. When it fails, multiple seemingly unrelated systems act up at the same time — that pattern is the clearest diagnostic indicator. Common causes and symptoms:

  • Water intrusion from clogged cowl drains — the leading cause on W204 and X204 platforms; blocked windshield drains overflow directly onto the SAM during rain or washing, corroding the circuit board
  • Wipers turning on spontaneously or won’t turn off — wipers activate without input, run at one speed regardless of stalk position, or stop working entirely
  • Headlights or fog lights staying on after ignition off — exterior lights refuse to extinguish, or cycle on randomly; lighting-fault warnings in the instrument cluster
  • No-start or no-crank condition — SAM fails to communicate with the immobilizer; car won’t start or turn over; key not recognized despite good battery and starter
  • Parasitic battery drain — dead battery overnight — failing SAM stays “awake” after shutdown, continuously pulling current and depleting the battery within hours
  • Turn signals or hazards inoperative — stalk commands ignored, hyper-fast flash rate with no bulb issue, or signals activate without input
  • Dashboard warning cascade — SRS, ABS, ESP, or multiple unrelated cluster warnings illuminate simultaneously with no single obvious cause
  • U0140 or CAN communication loss codes — any scan tool reports lost communication with the front SAM; XENTRY shows N10/1 not responding on the bus

U0140 appears on any generic scan tool when the front SAM has failed and is the most commonly seen code with water-damage failures. More specific platform codes may accompany it in a full XENTRY session. Include your complete fault report — with both the original and donor module part numbers — in your work order and we will review before you ship anything.

Clone process

How our SAM clone & programming service works

  1. Submit a work order Provide your 17-digit VIN, part numbers from both your original and donor SAM, and your symptoms or fault codes. We confirm fitment and pricing by email — same business day.
  2. Ship both modules together Pack your original SAM (even if damaged) and your good working donor SAM and send both to our Fort Myers, FL facility. Both modules are required; the service cannot proceed with only one.
  3. Clone, program & bench-test We extract your vehicle’s configuration data from the original, flash it onto the donor module, and bench-test all electrical functions before anything ships. Everything is documented.
  4. Back in 2–3 days Your cloned, plug-and-play SAM ships back with tracked return, full installation instructions, and your lifetime warranty confirmed in writing.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is a SAM module clone & programming service?

A clone service extracts your vehicle’s unique programming — VIN, option codes, lighting package, and configuration data — from your original SAM and writes it onto a donor (replacement) module. The result is a module configured identically to your original, plug-and-play ready, with no further programming required on your end.

How is this different from a programmed-exchange service?

With a programmed exchange, ECU Maverick provides the replacement unit from its own inventory and programs it to your VIN. With this clone service, you supply the donor module — a used SAM you sourced yourself. This is the better choice when you already have a replacement SAM on hand, bought one from a salvage yard, or want to avoid paying for an exchange unit entirely.

What condition does the donor SAM need to be in?

The donor module must be electrically intact and capable of storing programming data — it does not need to be programmed to your VIN. Cosmetic damage and cracked housings are acceptable. If you’re unsure whether your donor is functional, note that in the work order and we will test and advise before proceeding.

My original SAM is heavily corroded from water damage — can you still read it?

Often yes. Even significantly corroded SAM modules frequently retain their configuration data in non-volatile memory. We attempt a full read from every original received. If the board is too damaged to read, we can program the donor to your VIN directly using your vehicle identification number and known option codes — include your VIN in the work order and we will confirm which approach applies to your situation before you ship.

Do I get both modules back?

We return your programmed donor module, ready to install. Your original is retained as a core unless you request otherwise. If you need the original returned, note it in your work order before shipping; we will accommodate where possible and advise on any additional shipping charges.

Do I need any programming after receiving the cloned module?

No. The returned module is fully programmed to your VIN and vehicle option configuration. Installation is plug-and-play — no XENTRY session, no dealer visit, no key relearn, and no additional scanning is required.

What vehicles does this clone service cover?

This service covers the Mercedes-Benz W204 C-Class (2011–2015), W212 E-Class (2010–2013), W218 CLS-Class (2012–2013), X204 GLK-Class (2012–2015), and R172 SLK-Class (2012–2016), across all trim levels and engine variants listed in the fitment table above.

What is the turnaround time?

2–3 business days on the bench from the day we receive both modules, plus tracked return shipping transit time. We reply to work orders the same business day and confirm receipt when your package arrives.

Do I need to clear the cowl drains before reinstalling on a W204 or X204?

Yes — and this is the most important installation step if your original SAM failed due to water damage. The blocked cowl drain that destroyed the original will destroy the replacement if it is not cleared first. Flush both windshield cowl drain channels until water flows freely before the new module goes in.

What warranty comes with the cloned module?

Every cloned and programmed module is covered by our lifetime warranty, confirmed in writing in your work-order email thread.
