Symptoms this repairs:
Doors lock or unlock erratically or intermittently — works sometimes, not others, usually getting worse over time
The key fob or the center-console button operates some doors but not others (often the passenger door won't unlock)
A rapid clicking or chattering from a door as the lock tries and fails to throw
Central locking dead — the car only opens with the key in the door
Fuel-filler flap won't release (it's on the same circuit)
Symptoms worse on hot days or after the car sits in the sun
Before you ship: three checks that save you time and money
A blown fuse or a shorted actuator can imitate a failing module exactly. Please rule these out first....if the module tests functional on our bench, an evaluation fee applies.
Check the fuses. On the E85/E86 Z4, the General Module is fed by fuses 10, 11, and 12 in the glovebox fuse panel. Use the paper fuse card in your glovebox lid for the correct amperage on your specific car — don't rely on a diagram found online. If replacing a blown fuse restores your locks, you don't need us.
Does the fuse blow again? Then you have a short, not a bad module. The usual suspect is the fuel filler flap actuator — unplug it and retest. Chafed wiring in the trunk harness is the next thing to check. And never fit a higher-amp fuse to stop it blowing; that's a fire risk, not a repair.
One door or all of them? A single door that fails the same way every time usually means that door's own actuator. Intermittent faults, or faults that shift between doors, point to the module's relays — that's what we fix.
