 The DSM/ISM as the electronic brain for your gear shifter. In modern Mercedes-Benz vehicles, there is no physical cable running from your gear selector (on the steering column or console) to the transmission. Instead, when you move the lever to Park, Reverse, or Drive, you are sending an electronic signal to this small, specialized computer module mounted directly on the transmission.
