What this service is

A mail-in bench diagnostic for the Access & Start Authorization module — the KESSY, also listed as J518 or "Driver Identification Control Unit." It is the module behind "IMMOBILIZER ACTIVE," a dash that lights up but won't crank, a steering lock that stays locked, or a key that stopped being recognized.

Parts-swapping this system is expensive and often wrong. The KESSY, the key transponder, the electronic ignition switch and the electronic steering lock all produce similar symptoms, and a used module will not work in your car without the correct data. We test the actual parts from your vehicle together, on a bench built for this platform, and tell you which one failed.

What to send

Scope

We repair, program and clone modules. We do not perform vehicle-side diagnosis, installation, or in-car programming, and we cannot diagnose your car over the phone. Wiring, connector and installation work is handled by your shop or technician.

If a module has been opened, water damaged, or previously written to by another party, please tell us up front. It does not necessarily mean we can't help, but it changes what we look for.

Honest note on outcomes

Not every module is repairable, and not every fault turns out to be the module. Roughly speaking, this system fails in four places, and our job is to tell you which one — even when the answer is "your module is fine, your key is dead." If our testing shows the fault is on the vehicle and not in the parts you sent, you still get the report and the evidence, and you have not spent money on a module you didn't need.

My locksmith said the key tests good. Can it still be the key? Yes, and it frequently is. A key can transmit on the remote frequency and still fail the vehicle's transponder authentication. Those are two separate circuits inside the same fob. We test the transponder against your actual module.

Can I just buy a used module from eBay? A used KESSY is programmed to another vehicle's VIN, keys and steering lock. Fitted as-is, it will not start your car. It can be used as a donor if your original data is recoverable — that is one of the outcomes our diagnostic determines.

Do I need to send the steering lock? yes, but if your complaint includes the steering lock not releasing, please be sure to mention it. 

How many keys should I send? All of them. 

Will you tell me the code or PIN for my car? No. Security data stays with the module and the vehicle owner's repair.

Do you work on Continental-built KESSY units? Some, case by case. Send the part number from the label and we will tell you before you ship.

What if you can't fix it? You get the report and our recommendation. We will tell you plainly if replacement or dealer programming is the better path.
