MBE906 PLD-MR Engine ECU
Part Number: 000 446 74 40

In stock and ready to program to your truck. This is the engine-mounted PLD-MR control unit (also called the PLD, MR, or engine-resident control unit) used on Mercedes-Benz / Detroit Diesel MBE900-series 6-cylinder engines. We transfer your original module's data into this unit so it matches your engine — no guesswork, no generic programming.

Part numbers

  • Hardware part number: 000 446 74 40 (also listed as 0004467440 / A0004467440), ZGS 001, manufactured by Temic
  • Detroit designation: PLD-MR D21, Software Release 53, 12/24 V, 6-cylinder
  • Example calibration numbers on this hardware: A 061 446 86 40, A 061 446 83 40 (your calibration is transferred from your original unit)

Match the part number on your module's label before ordering. The 4-cylinder MBE904 uses a different part number (000 446 78 40), and later units use different part numbers and software.

Applications

Mercedes-Benz / Detroit Diesel MBE900-series 6-cylinder (MBE906 / OM906) engines, including engine model codes 906.981 and 906.929. Commonly found in:

  • Freightliner FL70 and other FL-series trucks
  • Freightliner Business Class / M2
  • Sterling trucks with MBE900 engines
  • Thomas Built buses with MBE900 engines
  • Fire apparatus, municipal, and vocational trucks on these chassis

How it works – plug and play

  1. Place your order and ship us your original PLD-MR (core required).
  2. We read your original module's memory and transfer your engine's calibration, engine serial number, and parameters into the replacement.
  3. We verify the transfer and bench-test the unit.
  4. We ship it back ready to bolt on — built to match your engine, not a generic setup.

We program your engine's original factory calibration. No tuning, no emissions modifications.

If your original module is too damaged to read, contact us before ordering — parameters may need to be set with Detroit dealer software.

Common symptoms of a failing PLD-MR

  • No throttle response or engine won't rev
  • No start, or hard start
  • White smoke from incorrect injection timing
  • Misfire or dead cylinders
  • Gauges reading wrong — battery voltage low on the dash while actual voltage is normal, oil pressure pegged
  • Multiple sensor codes coming and going at the same time
  • Loss of communication between the engine and the cab

Related fault codes

  • SID 233-12 – PLD-MR failed or programmed incorrectly
  • SID 233-14 – Incorrect or misprogrammed PLD-MR
  • SID 248 – PLD-MR / DDEC-VCU datalink fault
  • PID 102-02 – Boost pressure sensor data erratic (when active with 233-12)
  • PID 168-04 – Battery voltage low
  • SID 21 / SID 64 – Crankshaft / camshaft position sensor faults

These codes can also come from wiring, sensors, or charging problems. Check power, grounds, harness, and sensors first. A good test: if a known-good PLD-MR clears the problem, the module is the cause.

Common causes of failure

  • Injector / unit-pump driver circuit failures
  • Water intrusion and internal corrosion
  • Vibration and impact cracking solder joints
  • Internal power supply faults causing false sensor readings
