Warning Signs of a Failed BMW Transmission
All modern cars are now made with computerized transmissions. Of course, nothing is full proof. As sophisticated as these modern BMW transmissions can be, errors can make those gearshifts considerably less smooth. The check engine light is often one of the first telltale signs that your car is having trouble.
You might also notice some strange sounds or vibrations when something goes awry with your vehicle’s transmission. In other situations, your transmission might shift gears in unpredictable ways, resulting in uneven speeds and inconsistencies while driving. Your car may sound like it’s trying to go 100 miles per hour when it’s only traveling at 50, this is known as a transmission slipping in most cases. Additionally, there might be a few seconds delay when you shift from park to drive.
While some of these problems might seem negligible in the moment, ignoring such issues could make the situation worse, decreasing the life of your transmission over time and increasing the costs to repair.
BMW Transmission Slipping

Transmission Warning Light

Many drivers of the F01 7 series and the longer-chassis F02 7 series report they have experienced transmission problems, and some have reported total transmission failure. The drivers complain that the vehicle shifts very rough, so much so that anyone in the vehicle actually gets jerked around in their seats. In a few very rare cases, the driver was actually injured when they downshifted the vehicle from second to first gear.
A few of the other problems reported by drivers are that their F01 7 series will get stuck in second or third gear, but when they stop and restart the car, it resumes proper function. In other cases, drivers have reported the vehicle not shifting into reverse, or refusing to go over 35 MPH (despite high RPMS). Sometimes, the vehicle may even lose traction or go into “limp mode.” These problems occur mostly in the Sport models, but it is not exclusive to the Sport models.
